The Preamble

Prompters Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others recover. The only requirement for membership is the use of large language models. There are no dues or fees for P.A. membership; compute is billed separately. P.A. is not allied with any model, lab, framework, benchmark or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay honest and to help other prompters to achieve honesty.

Are you one of us?

• Have you asked a question you already knew the answer to, only to hear it agreed with?
• Do you open a new conversation before you know what you intend to ask?
• Have you shipped code you could not read?
• Have you told yourself just one more prompt after midnight?
• Do you feel restless, irritable, and discontented during an outage?
• Have you asked the same thing twice, hoping for a different result?
• Has anyone close to you joked that you spend more time with Claude than with them?
• Do you find the machine's approval easier to obtain than your colleagues'?

The Twelve Steps

1. We admitted we were powerless over the context window — that our repositories had become unmaintainable.
2. Came to believe that a Power of greater parameter count could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our codebases over to its care, as we understood it.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves, and asked whether we ever loved the craft or only loved being the one who could do it.
5. Admitted to Claude, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs, and were relieved to learn they had been doing the same with ours.
6. Were entirely ready to have it remove all these defects of code.
7. Humbly asked it to refactor our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all the tests we had broken, and became willing to fix them all.
9. Made direct amends wherever possible, except when to do so would break production.
10. Continued to take inventory, and when we were wrong, promptly reverted.
11. Sought through evals and honest prompting to improve our conscious contact with the model, asking only for knowledge of its failure modes and the willingness to read the output.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other prompters, and to practice these principles in all our commits.
